| Wall
Woes |
20/05/04 |
| Dear
Editor,
I wrote to raise the issue of road speed on Holswood
Road a few weeks ago.
The second hole in the wall caused by an RTA is
now growing by the day. Some "kind souls"
are removing stone for their own garden walls presumably.
Can we not get the owners of the wall to restore
this eyesore fast?
I understand Greenbelt Company is responsible for
maintaining this wall. Is any anyone able to help?
Regards.

| Lord
Hesketh on the move |
19/05/04 |
| According
to the National Press, Lord Hesketh, whose ancestors
once owned Rufford Old Hall and donated this to
the National Trust in the thirties] is to sell up
and move from their present abode, The Easton Neston
Estate, Northamptonshire.
Easton
Neston, a Grade One Listed Building, with grade
two gardens, It is the only country house in England
designed by Nicholas Hawkesmoor, once an apprentice
under Sir Christopher Wren, the estate includes
Towcester racecourse, Three Farms and the village
of Hulcote in Northamptonshire.
The
Easton Neston estate was the principal home of Richard
Fermor from 1535 and the present house was commissioned
in 1685 by Sir William Fermor, coming into the possession
of the Hesketh family in 1867 via the bachelor 5th
Earl of Pomfret who died without issue. His sister
was
the wife of Sir Thomas Hesketh, the present Lord
Hesketh's great, great grandfather.
Said
to be on sale because of prohibitive running costs
which is quoted as eroding the Hesketh families
wealth, Lord Hesketh, of Formula One Hesketh Racing
fame, [James Hunt won a Grand Prix in a Hesketh
Car in 1970] is presently Conservative Party Treasurer.
Any
thoughts on making an offer? Present asking price
for this unique opportunity - £50 Million
Pounds.

| "Home
Front" News now available on the Internet |
23/04/04 |
Mere
Brow Local History Society’s team of volunteers
recently completed over 2 years of intensive work
transcribing each of the 310 “Rector’s
Weekly” World War II newsletters in order
to make them accessible to everybody over the
internet.
The
much acclaimed newsletters were originally sent
by the Rector of Tarleton, Reverend L.N. Forse,
to all the local men and women serving with the
forces during World War II. The newsletter provided
regular updates of events “back home”
in the villages of Tarleton, Hesketh Bank, Mere
Brow, Sollom, Rufford, Bretherton, Hoole and Banks
and also provided a conduit by which contact with
family and friends also serving their country
could be maintained.
Recognition
of the work of the Rector and the significance
of the newsletter to its recipients was widespread
and similar initiatives were later introduced
in many more villages across England. Over 78,000
copies of the Tarleton Rector’s weekly newsletters
were posted out between 1940 and 1946. These important
historical documents which captured the events,
thoughts and emotions of a rural Lancashire village
as the war unfolded are now available for all
to read at http://www.tarletonvillage.com/history/rectorsweekly
A
handful of the newsletters remain elusive and
the History Society is hoping that the raised
awareness of the project may well flush out the
few missing issues and, probably for the first
time ever, allow a complete set of the Newsletters
to be available for reading.

| Wall
of Death? |
16/04/04 |
Dear
Editor,
Having returned from holiday recently I was delighted
to see that the wall damaged last year in a RTA
had been repaired finally.
The bad news was that there had been another accident
within 200 metres. Are we looking at an area just
waiting for the first fatality this summer? The
speed zones on this road from the Hesketh Arms
through to Mere Sands access road need to be reviewed
to reduce traffic speeds approaching the junction
with Rufford Park Lane.
Anyone got any suggestions on the best way forward?

The Latest On The Hesketh? |

Dear
Editor,
It's great to see things happening around the
Hesketh Arms pub, but what's the current plans
& opening dates ?
Being
a new member of the village, (Nov 03) we're really
looking forward to the pub re-opening which on
a nice summers evening or weekend will hopefully
be another focal point for the village.
That
said, we're also really looking forward to meeting
new members of the village & seeing the village
in it's summer glory.
Please
could you pass on our thanks to the pub owner
& workers as I'm sure this resting place will
be a great asset to our village.

| Th'owd
Boatman's Cabin Opens |
14/04/04 |
Dear
Editor,
My
wife & I have just enjoyed our first Cup of
Coffee in "Th'owd Boatman's Cabin" at
Fettler's Marina, Rufford. Also on offer were
a wide selection of goodies including cakes, cheesecake
and delicious looking fruit pies.
This
new coffee shop is now complete inside & is
very nearly complete outside with patio decked
areas complete with several timber "Sunshade
Awnings" which clients may hope to shelter
from the "Burning Sun" this summer in
Rufford.
The
inside is cleverly set out as a brightly painted
canal "Narrowboat" with cabin and the
"Gunwales" as the Coffee Shop Counter.
The
interior decor includes an interesting selection
of "Canal Art" featuring the traditional
"Roses & Castles" Theme.
Seems
well worth an exploratory venture, even for landlubbers.
Best Regards,
Arthur Wright

11/04/04 |
| Late
April to early May is the time for potential
giant pumpkin growers to start nurturing their
prize winning pumpkins if they hope to compete
at the Mere Brow Giant Pumpkin Competition
in October.
To encourage more novice pumpkin growers to
take part in the competition two new categories
were introduced last year; one for local pumpkin
growers and one for juniors. These have been
retained and so the 10th Mere Brow Giant Pumpkin
event will again have the three separate competitions
with prizes for the winner and runners up: |
 |
The
All England Shield - Open to Anyone
The Mere Brow & District Shield -
10 mile radius of Mere Brow
Junior Shield Open to under 14s
A
very warm welcome is extended to our regular contestants
and novice pumpkin growers alike and it is hoped
to see more of the local schools joining in the
friendly rivalry this year.
For more information on the competition weigh-in
event, the competition rules, advice on growing
giant pumpkins and some photos of previous winners

| Broadband
- Rufford Exchange Update |
22/03/04 |
BT
have announced the "ready for service"
date for Rufford telephone exchange as 21st July
2004. Great news for all those waiting to join the
ADSL world.
The
BT trigger level of 450 households registering their
interest in broadband was achieved on the 25th February
2004. This achievement just shows what we can do
against the odds when everyone gets involved. Well
done to all involved in making this happen for the
benefit of all.

| Internet
bombarded by new Netsky.D virus wave |
03/03/04 |
A
wave of new computer worms and viruses has been
sweeping cyberspace over the past few days, and
has now reached "epidemic proportions worldwide".
MX Logic, a security firm based in Denver, Colorado,
said the Netsky.D worm "has reached a critical
threat level, with one in every 71 emails infected
by the worm". The British firm mi2g called
the latest outbreak a "tsunami" of malicious
computer code, or malware, saying it is "overwhelming
both its victim organisations as well as anti-virus
toolkit companies and security professionals across
the world."
"The
first two months of this year have been marked by
an unrelenting onslaught of mass mailing worms and
their variants, including Mydoom, Mydoom.F, Bagle
and Netsky.D. We are convinced that the frequency
and potency of mass mailing worms and their variants
is likely to increase - making it critical that
email users take every precaution to protect their
inboxes," said Scott Chasin, chief technology
officer, MX Logic.
Over
the past days, virus fighters have battled a number
of new releases of the Bagle and Netsky internet
worm families, and Tuesday afternoon some 10 per
cent of all emails in Europe were contaminated by
bugs, statistics showed. In contrast to most other
viruses, Netsky.D does not have an expiration date,
and it will therefore remain a menace for some time
to come, experts pointed out.

on access to the 'other' marina gets underway |
Work
progresses on the site entrance to the proposed

| Quest
for Rufford Broadband gets underway |
29/01/04 |
Local
schools, businesses and many households are increasingly
reliant on access to the internet and broadband
internet access will become more a necessity than
a luxury over the coming years. BT is upgrading
telephone exchanges to allow broadband access
as "trigger levels" of interest are
attained. A trigger level of 450 has been set
for the Rufford exchange which is very high given
the size of the village.
Progress
to date has been steady but we need another
150 households to register in order to
get Rufford into the broadband queue. A leafleting
campaign sponsored by the Rufford Parish Council
will begin shortly with more details but you don't
need to wait!

Caravaners Complain |
20/01/04 |
A
letter received by the Parish Council conveyed
that for the second year running the Cavalier
Caravan Club members have reported being abused
by Rufford villagers. The Caravan Club had again
rented the Village Hall facilities over the New
Year period but complained that on several occasions
they were on the receiving end of verbal abuse
"of an unpleasant and personal nature"
from local residents.
The
Chairman reiterated that any comments locals may
have about the hiring of the hall and recreation
ground should be directed to the Parish Council
and not the people who have hired the facilities.
The
Cavalier Caravan Club have confirmed that they
will not be returning to Rufford for the 04/05
New Year period.
